Borough Market

Borough market is one of the largest market in the capital. We can find wholesalers, retailers and also crafts. The earliest records date back from 1276 but some sources claim it first established in 1014. This is in fact one of the oldest vegs and food market in London. In the middle ages people socialized in the markets and of course places for trading. The original market was originally located on the riverside by the end of London bridge. In medieval times Southwark wasn’t part of London and traders undercut their commodities for competition so that the City of London banned its citizens from heading south past London Bridge.

The development of the area and the increase of traffic through centuries caused congestions in the 1700’s. Legal authorities decided to abolish the market in 1754 by an act of parliament. In the same year a second act allowed parishioners to settle to a new location. In 1756 the market re-opened and thrived due to its strategic location, just a short walk from Southwark Cathedral, the riverside and the city of London. Proximity from the city, London Bridge station and many other premises is vital for the market to survive although a decline in the middle of the 90’s. Trustees revived it more as a retail market rather than a wholesale one.

Today’s architecture is a 19th century’s style as it underwent renovation to make it covered. Borough market opens at 2AM on week days for wholesalers only and from 10AM for general public (9AM on Saturdays) to close at 5PM. On Sunday from 10AM to 4PM. Expect it to be very busy on the weekends.
