Statue of King Charles I

King Charles I was King of England from 1625 to1649. His reign was marked by turmoil and conflicts with the parliament.

Deeply religious King Charles I asserted the divine right significance of the monarch the hight form of worship of Anglicanism. Which sparked disagreements between him and many of his subjects and politicians.

King Charles I was born in 1600. The monarch was influenced by his visits to the Spanish court it gave momentum in the introduction of the Spanish arts in England. It is estimated 1760 masterpieces he acquired and commissioned throughout his reign.

Which is described one of the most extraordinary collections of his time. King’s Charles I’s reign was not just about misery and misfortune as it often overshadows his contribution for the arts.

The equestrian statue of Charles I is a bronze statue located at Trafalgar square near Charing cross station.

The statue was casted by the French sculptor Hubert Le Sueur where the Eleanor crosses ounce stood were erected by King Edward I. The statue faces down Banqueting house which is his place of execution. By the way it is the first renaissance style statue built in England commissioned by Charles’s Lord treasurer Richard Weston in 1630 for his country house in Roehampton, Surrey. For me this is the second thing to see in Trafalgar square with the iconic statue of Nelson.
