The Cenotaph is a war monument located on Whitehall. It was designed by the British architect Edwin Landseer Lutyens (1898-1944). This monument was unveiled in 1920 to remember those who fought for Britain and the British empire during WWI. The monument is including WWII since 1946. They needed a monument for public mourning to remember every year those who fought for Britain during the both conflicts.

The word cenotaph is the Greek for empty tomb so that no name is inscribed on it. It symbolizes all those who gave their lives or those who have never found. Another symbolism of all soldiers who perished is the unknown soldier’s grave located inside Westminster Abbey. The cenotaph is the landmark for national commemorations services especially on the remembrance Sunday which take place every year on November. People gather around the monarch in a moment of unity with a minute of silence. A military parade also takes place and It was for me a great experience.
